1. How Lily Stole Christmas.

Season 2, Episode 11, 2006

Ted nearly ruins Christmas when an old voicemail surfaces of him calling Lily a “grinch” (a placeholder for a much worse word). Furious, Lily removes all the holiday decorations from the apartment. While Marshall struggles with a law school paper, Ted must find a way to apologise and save the holiday spirit. Meanwhile, a sick Barney wallows in holiday misery.

2. Little Minnesota.

Season 4, Episode 11, 2008

Ted’s sister Heather visits NYC, prompting Ted to frantically keep Barney away from her. In the B-plot, a homesick Robin finds refuge at a “Little Minnesota” bar with Marshall. To fit in, Robin pretends to be a Minnesotan, leading to a heartwarming exploration of her Canadian roots and Marshall’s love for his home state.

3. False Positive.

Season 6, Episode 12, 2010

A false positive pregnancy test for Marshall and Lily sends the gang into a whirlwind of life-altering decisions: Barney considers charity, Robin eyes a serious job, and the Eriksens start baby-proofing. When the news turns out to be a false alarm, the group tries to revert to their old ways until Ted intervenes to keep their personal growth on track.

4. Symphony of Illumination.

Season 7, Episode 12, 2011

In a departure from the usual format, Robin narrates to her “imaginary” children. After a pregnancy scare leads to the news that she cannot have children, a devastated Robin keeps her grief private. Sensing her sadness, Ted creates an elaborate, synchronised Christmas light display set to AC/DC to let her know she’s never alone.

Robin becomes increasingly obsessed with Barney’s new relationship with Patrice, leading her to break into his apartment to find “The Playbook” and prove he hasn’t changed. As she hides in his wardrobe, she is joined by several other members of the gang who are also sneaking around for various reasons. Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily deal with Lily’s overbearing mother, and Ted struggles with his own “over-corrections” in his dating life.

Season 8, Episodes 11 & 12, 2012

The holiday magic peaks as Barney’s long-term “play” is finally revealed to be a elaborate scheme titled “The Robin.” After Ted gives Robin his blessing and encourages her to go to the roof of the WWN building, she finds it covered in Christmas lights and rose petals. Barney proposes, Robin says yes, and the group celebrates their engagement as the snow begins to fall over New York City.
